Electronic Recycling (E-cycle)

E-Cycle Wisconsin Program

The Village of Waterford participates in the E-Cycle Wisconsin program. Since September 2010 the items listed below are banned from Wisconsin landfills and incinerators. Wisconsin's electronics recycling law, effective September 2010, bans the items listed below from Wisconsin landfills and incinerators. It also establishes a statewide recycling program administered by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, which puts in place a system to collect and recycle discarded electronics. Consumer electronics such as televisions, printers, computers and monitors, VCRs, mice and keyboards, and cell phone, along with computer accessories such as flash drives and modems are covered under E-Cycle Wisconsin. Complete list of items banned from landfills and incinerator disposal.

Why E-Cycle?

"Consumer demand for new electronics has led to a significant electronic waste. A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study estimated that about 2.37 million tons of TVs, cell phones, and computer products were ready for recycling, reuse or disposal in 2009. Of these electronics, only about 25 percent (by weight) were collected for recycling." ~ WI DNR website

Electronics contain valuable reusable materials, conserving raw materials. Metals, glass, and plastics can be used to build new electronics, cutting the costs of new materials. Electronics may also contain heavy metals such as lead and mercury and hazardous chemicals that can pollute the environment.

Electronics Recyclers

The E-Cycle Wisconsin program helps Wisconsin homes and schools. Some E-Cycle Wisconsin collectors and recyclers also accept electronics from businesses, colleges and universities.
